About Me
Dementia and Your Loved One

I've been a caretaker of an elderly woman with dementia for over two years. I've seen the effects of this mental affliction, and how devastating it can be to loved ones. This is why I am a firm believer in seeking a professional diagnosis, so the patient may receive necessary care and treatment. Once diagnosed at the onset of symptoms, a plan can be devised. Through social interaction and daily care, my charge has achieved a higher quality of life. If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, you can make a difference. Love will find a way.

Marijuana RX: How Can Medicinal Cannabis Help Glaucoma?

Vickie Armstrong

Medicinal cannabis is being lauded as helping consumers with a wide-range of ailments and illnesses, and those suffering from Glaucoma may also find health benefits associated with cannabis products. Glaucoma is a debilitating and progressive disease that affects three-million people in the United States alone, and it is not limited to the older population.

Some things to know about Glaucoma and medical cannabis include:

Glaucoma creates high eye-pressure. Just like blood-pressure, eye-pressure can cause issues when it gets too high. The things that cause high eye-pressure could be lifestyle-related, or there may be a genetic link to a member of your family that also had glaucoma. Medical cannabis can lower or reduce eye-pressure, which will prevent further deterioration of your sight and alleviate some of the pain and dry-eye caused by this condition.

Glaucoma is progressive. Glaucoma may go undetected for years but could be diagnosed by your vision provider and often manifests in worsening vision or changing vision. For example, if you find yourself constantly taking glasses on or off, can't see well even with prescription eyewear, or if you experience pain behind your eyes, you could be experiencing symptoms of Glaucoma.

There is no cure for Glaucoma. Glaucoma and its effects on your vision are irreversible. However, you can prevent further deterioration through using cannabis products. Another way to slow-down a decline in vision might be found by adopting a whole food, plant-based diet. The pain associated with Glaucoma may also decrease through using cannabis or cannabidiol oil products, such as tinctures, lozenges, vaporizers, or edibles.

Medical cannabis is becoming legal widely. If you don't currently live in a state that offers medical cannabis to those diagnosed with Glaucoma, be patient; the laws are changing and more states are recognizing the healthful benefits of this plant. Cannabis is currently legalized medically in 26 states, and eight states have legalized it recreationally, so individuals in these regions can access Glaucoma treatment. If you are unable to access medical cannabis for your current condition, reach out to your representatives and legislators to promote further legalization efforts in your region.

The healthful properties of cannabis are becoming more and more accepted, and it remains a widely endorsed treatment for Glaucoma and for lowering the eye-pressure in those afflicted. Make sure to have regular eye check-ups to ensure you are not at risk for early-onset Glaucoma, and talk to your provider about how you may benefit from medical cannabis if you are diagnosed.
