Dementia and Your Loved One
About Me
Dementia and Your Loved One

I've been a caretaker of an elderly woman with dementia for over two years. I've seen the effects of this mental affliction, and how devastating it can be to loved ones. This is why I am a firm believer in seeking a professional diagnosis, so the patient may receive necessary care and treatment. Once diagnosed at the onset of symptoms, a plan can be devised. Through social interaction and daily care, my charge has achieved a higher quality of life. If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, you can make a difference. Love will find a way.

Stairlift Considerations

Vickie Armstrong

You never want to feel like you do not have access to your entire house. Unfortunately, if you start to suffer from joint problems, or if you lose mobility, you could not have access to the upper portion of your home. If this is the case, then you should start looking into different stair lifts that can give you access to your upstairs. There are many different stair lifts that you can invest in, and most of them are going to be a great investment. Here are just a few things to look for in your stairlift:

Brakes

One of the most important aspects of your stairlift will be the braking system. You want to have a good electrical braking system, but you also want to have the option of stopping mechanically. Every once in awhile the electrical brake will malfunction and you will want the ability to mechanically stop the lift. It is also very important that the braking system is extremely smooth. There is nothing worse than a stairlift that is choppy or jumpy. The good news is that you will find most stairlifts have a smooth braking system and that you will have electrical and mechanical braking systems.

Locking System

Another safety feature that you should consider is having a locking system on your stairlift. This is especially important if you have a lot of visitors or children in the house. Your stairlift will become a very important part of your home, but it is not a toy. So, you will want to have the ability to lock your stairlift. Usually, this is a standard feature of a stairlift, but you do not want to get caught off guard. Usually, the locking system will have a key or a keypad, but each will allow you to keep complete control on who uses your stairlift.

Sensors

You want your stairlift to come equipped with all the safety sensors possible. Some of the most important sensors that you want your stairlift to come equipped with is a loss of control sensor. This will also come with the braking system. You do not ever want the stairlift to lose control, and the sensor can allow you to take control of the stairlift. You should also look for a stairlift that has a sensor that informs you of the type of power running your lift. You will want a lift that can run on electrical or battery power.
