About Me
Dementia and Your Loved One

I've been a caretaker of an elderly woman with dementia for over two years. I've seen the effects of this mental affliction, and how devastating it can be to loved ones. This is why I am a firm believer in seeking a professional diagnosis, so the patient may receive necessary care and treatment. Once diagnosed at the onset of symptoms, a plan can be devised. Through social interaction and daily care, my charge has achieved a higher quality of life. If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, you can make a difference. Love will find a way.

Helpful Podiatry Services For Factory Workers

Vickie Armstrong

Factory work can be very hard on your feet. Not only are you on your feet for the entire shift, but you're mostly standing in one place, which is a lot harder on your feet than slowly walking all day. The same parts of your feet will be under pressure for hours on end, and there is also a tendency for fluid to pool in your feet, leading to inflammation. Luckily, podiatrists offer an array of services that can be very helpful for factory workers expected to stand all day.

Orthotics

Orthotics are basically padded inserts that you put inside your shoes. You can buy them over the counter at the pharmacy and even at some department stores. But the problem with these over-the-counter orthotics is that they may or may not offer support in the right areas. Everyone stands on their feet a bit differently, and it is important to have orthotics that are made or selected with your unique foot shape and weight distribution in mind. A podiatrist can design custom orthotics or at least recommend the right over-the-counter orthotics for you to wear. Putting them inside your shoes will ease the pressure on your soles, help to prevent tendon soreness, and generally keep your feel more comfortable throughout your shift.

Ingrown Toenail Treatment

Many people who work in factories develop ingrown toenails as a result of spending multiple hours with shoes pushing downward on their toenails. If left untreated, these ingrown toenails often become infected. At that stage, they become quite painful; the infection can also spread further up the foot, leading to more serious consequences. A podiatrist can trim an ingrown toenail in a way that will keep it from worsening.

Stretch Guidance

Your podiatrist can also show you some stretches that you can perform throughout the day to keep your feet looser and more limber when you're standing on the factory floor all day. You can do these stretches at lunchtime or on a break. They'll help keep your tendons lose, which will make you less prone to problems like Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis, both of which are really common in factory workers.

If you work on your feet in a factory session, it is a good idea to make periodic appointments with a podiatrist. They can keep an eye on your feet to ensure any issues are diagnosed early, and if needed, they can recommend treatments like the ones above.
