About Me
Dementia and Your Loved One

I've been a caretaker of an elderly woman with dementia for over two years. I've seen the effects of this mental affliction, and how devastating it can be to loved ones. This is why I am a firm believer in seeking a professional diagnosis, so the patient may receive necessary care and treatment. Once diagnosed at the onset of symptoms, a plan can be devised. Through social interaction and daily care, my charge has achieved a higher quality of life. If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's disease, you can make a difference. Love will find a way.

4 Types Of Common Ultrasounds And What They Do

Vickie Armstrong

In the world of ultrasounds, you may think that there's only one type of image that's used to help treat patients, but luckily there are several different types of ultrasound exams that can be used to detect a variety of conditions ranging from pregnancy to heart disease.

1. Transvaginal Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound is a type of ultrasound that is used to take a closer look inside of the vagina. By using a probe and inserting it into the vagina, this type of ultrasound can be used to look at the cervix, the uterus, and the ovaries to check for things like cysts, cancer, early pregnancy, and more.

2. Obstetric Ultrasound

When you find out you are pregnant, one of the most exciting things you will get to do is have your first ultrasound. During a pregnancy ultrasound, your radiologist will take images of your uterus to take a closer look at the baby. During your first visit (around 8 weeks), they will just check for a heartbeat, but at your 20-week appointment, your radiologist will do a more thorough ultrasound in order to check for things like heart defects, birth defects, sex, and the overall growth of the baby.

3. Echocardiography

An echocardiography is a type of ultrasound that is used on the heart to help detect heart problems like heart disease. If you have a family history of heart disease, are having certain health issues, or if you have experienced things like heart palpitations, then your doctor may order one of these ultrasounds in order to get a closer look at all of the valves and blood vessels that are running in and out of your heart. Typically during an echocardiography exam, your doctor will look for things like clogged or weakened arteries.

4. Abdominal Ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound is an ultrasound that actually covers a lot more than the abdomen. In fact, this type of ultrasound is used to take a closer look at all of the organs surrounding the abdomen such as the kidneys, the gall bladder, the intestines, and more. Typically this sort of ultrasound is ordered if your doctor thinks that you have some sort of gastro issue or infection that needs to be taken care of.
